Hey Fran!!! :) Thank you so much for you site! There's not a day that goes by that I don't look at your webpage! I've been told that coconut oil is moisturizing, but it makes my hair feel like straw. I apply it on freshly washed hair and for some reason I don't think it is strong enough to lock in my moisture. What should I do?!
Thanks for the love <3 <3 <3
Coconut Oil isn’t for everyone! Apparently, coconut oil replenishes your hair of any missing protein. However, if your hair has enough protein in it…then adding coconut oil will make it feel hard! I would suggest trying coconut oil mixtures (where you’re using less) or try some Vatika Oil or the African Argan Elixir by Treasured Locks. Love that product! It has a dope mixture of argan, jojoba, sweet almond, castor and lavender!
How often do you reapply product to your hair? and do you soak your hair in a shower when you do it?
Soak in the shower? Not at all, love! If I did that, then I would have to wait all day for my hair to air dry again. I simply run my hand under the faucet and then squirt some of the leave-in (or whatever product I originally applied) to my wet palm. Then I run my hand over my hair to catch the frizz and refresh the outer curls (since those are the ones that get messed up). I’ll be posting a vid on that technique next week. It’s easier to watch!
hey fran! when i wear twistouts or braidouts i retwist/braid them about every 2-3 days with a mix of water and conditioner with a spray bottle. my mom however thinks i shouldnt do this and claims that it will "rotten" my hair. (shes against re-applying product if my hair isnt freshly washed). is this true? should i only reapply my products to freshly cleaned hair?
If I didn’t re-apply product to freshen up my look, my hair would be a messs! I’ve done it for years and haven’t had any issues whatsoever! If you look on youtube, most naturals re-apply product at some point, before washing again. Kinda hard not to unless you’re washing every day.
Hey Fran Heeey!! I love your youtube videos and I practically rush to my laptop when I get the email that you've posted a new one lol. As much as I love all of your hair tips today I wanted to ask you about healthy eating. I've struggled with my weight since junior high and I am now at my heaviest ever (183 -_-) and I wanted to get your opinion on green juice. I know that's something that you do and I wanted to know how one gets started?? HELP!! <3
Haha! That’s awesome. Thanks for the love <3
Getting started is pretty simple. Just jump right in and get your mouth/body used to the taste. Do you have a juicer? Try the combination of cucumber, kale, parsley, spinach, romaine, ginger, lemon and an apple. That’s the ultimate green juice! It’s not going to be the most amazing taste ever. I’m warning you now! But think of its value in nutrition and your mind will gradually get used to the taste. I actually crave it now! Hope that helps.
HFH! Im a swimmer and I love love love to be in the water as soon as the weather breaks. I just recently started taking better care of my hair, and I wanted to know if you have any suggestions on products I could use to give my hair extra protection from the chlorine. Thank You!
I usually drench my hair in water, then coat it with some extra virgin coconut oil. Both the water and oil penetrate deeply into the hair shaft, preventing as much chlorine from entering. Then cleanse and deep condition your hair afterwards!
Hey Fran! I can't seem to prevent single strand knots especially at my crown, the shortest part of my hair and the most fragile. My hair there is more tightly coiled then the 4a/3c fine hair that surrounds it. How can I prevent single strand knots at my crown and overall retain more length there? I have started sealing my ends everyday (twice a day) and moisturizing my twists with H2O and aloe but to no avail. Any suggestions would be immensely helpful! Thank you!
Don’t obsess over the knots! It’s pretty inevitable when you have textured hair. Also, they are a result of dryness. Aloe and water are an amazing combination but definitely not enough moisture. I would suggest using something a little thicker, that will penetrate a little deeper into your hair. When your hair is lubricated well enough, the strand can’t knot itself! Add some cream or an oil like virgin coconut for more protection and moisture. Hope that helps!
I was on the Target site looking at the shea moisture line and saw that the Curl Enhancing Smoothie says > May also be used as a deep conditioner; apply to wet hair and leave on for 15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly ... I looked around online I don't see anyone using it like this. Do you know have any experience using it a deep conditioner? I see you've used it in the detangling process. Was wondering how well it worked in that capacity... Thank You :)
I’ve never used it as a deep conditioner, but it’s so thick and full of amazing nutrients so I can totally see how it would be effective. I say go for it and test out your results! It’s an awesome product.
Hey Fran! I bought the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque when it first came out and absolutely hated it!!! BUT today I re purchased and used it the exact same way you did in your video....LOVE IT!!! Thanks!! I hope to see your new video soon! :-)
That’s awesome news! :) I’ll be posting the new video early next week! <3
Hey Fran. Thanks to you I started eating healthy and now I'm vegan. I can definitely say my body feel so much healthier and after I eat now I feel energetic instead of sluggish. I only drink water, herbal teas, soy, almond and coconut milk. I find it fun to cook now because its simply as heck and everything is good with just simply ingredients! Now I just need to get on with the exercise...lol. Thank you for being such an inspiration to me. Your amazing!
That makes my day way more than you know! I’m happy you’re feeling amazing <3 <3 Thank you for letting us know!
It’s Monday! That means it’s “Health & Beauty” day for me over at BGLH <3 Today we’re discussing what a healthy lifestyle includes, as well as a breakdown of what a nutritious and well-rounded plate/meal should look like. Click above!
Hey Fran, love your blog. I am looking to make some healthy changes and I'm looking for the best way to cleanse my body. What safe and natural cleanse do you suggest?
I’m gonna be honest with you, I don’t believe in the whole “cleanse” craze. Eating healthier foods will help your body cleanse itself, naturally. You don’t have to impose this process with juice fasts, pills or teas. Start removing processed foods from your daily intake and your body will begin to regenerate and replenish itself with the nutrients you give it! No better “cleanse” than healthy foods and water!
Just wondering if you have any advice or tips or videos on how to start dreads? This is the one thing I've never done and my son wants them done. Thanks Fran!
I’ve never had locs so I wouldn’t feel comfortable explaining the process of starting them. I only know how to maintain them! The best person to check out is Chesca Leigh - http://www.youtube.com/user/chescalocs
Hello. I am an author working on a book about locs and I need pictures. Please consider participating in my project and pass along this information to anyone you think may be willing to share their photos. Thank you in advance for your reply to my request.
