Hey Fran, Hey! lol. I love your blog. I find myself talking to people saying "HeyFranHey says..." lol. Something I've been trying to research, that I haven't found an answer to, is, is oil pulling safe during pregnancy?
Haha! I love that. Hey :) It is absolutely safe during pregnancy! It actually helps with a lot of the morning sickness you may be experiencing, so it’s a win win.
In case you missed the Oil Pulling video, watch here.
“Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.”—Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
Fran!! Stevia or Xylitol?? Everyone swears by one or the other and I haven't tried either, I stick to raw brown sugar or honey for sweeteners. I think I'm going to switch, so would you recommend either of these, and what do you use? -Thanks in advance, I adore your blog! :)
Hey :) Most health nuts use Stevia for drinks and Xylitol for food/baking. My only concern with Xylitol is that it’s a mild laxative until your body gets used to it. Keep that in mind! lol. I don’t use any sweeteners so I can’t give you any firsthand experience with either one! I’ve conditioned my body (by cutting off sugar for an entire month) to not need it. I hope that helps!
Also, read this post on Stevia. Mark is a super sincere and thorough health resource, in my opinion! Definitely bookmark his site if you ever have any doubts about an ingredient/product.
Hi. You seem to be knowledgeable about many things, so I have two questions if you don't mind. Do you know of or know where I can find any good recipes for green juice? Also, when doing both cardio and weight lifting in a day, which one should you do first?
Hey :) I have an entire tab full of awesome green juice recipes. Click here. And here’s a list of my favorite books on green juicing. As far as which one you should do first, my favorite and most effective trainer ever taught me that the order was based on your personal fitness goals. If you’re working out to primarily lose weight and burn fat, you should always do cardio last. If your primary goal is to build muscle and lean out, you should do strength training last. Think of it as though the last thing you do is what your body will continue to do, on its own, for the rest of the day (even while resting). Hope that helps!
I should probably title this post, “My Top 5 Hair Butters…of 2012” because lord knows I have a new rotation every few weeks years. I’ve actually narrowed it down this time, though, and I think i’m going to stick to these all-natural gems (Unless someone comes out with another dope healthy brand. I’m weak.). This doesn’t mean I use all of these at once. When a jar is done, I order one of these 5. I like keeping my hair challenged with different nutrients/products every few months so it doesn’t get dull. What sells me on a product? The ingredients, scent and how many days I can go without having to re-apply it. With that being said, here are the 5 all-natural butters i’m currently in lust with:
Ingredients: shea butter, raw pressed mango butter, avocado butter, apricot kernel oil, neem oil, sunflower oil, fragrance, optiphen (preservative)
Price: 4 oz -$13 | 16 oz - $26
I rave about this butter all the time, so this isn’t new for most of you. Aside from the incredible ingredients, the biggest plus for this product is the scent. When I sit down next to someone on the train, they ALWAYS turn (not exaggerating) and tell me I smell so good. It’s this light mixture of ginger, amber and vanilla. I also love that I can apply it to both my skin and hair. Being able to do that let’s me know i’ve picked a dope and clean product <3 I buy this for these colder months, since it’s rich and thick. It gives me some serious moisture on my skin and hair for days and a little goes a long way.
Ingredients: Rice milk, distilled water, aloe vera, btms, shea butter, olive oil, coconut, sesame oil, avocado, macadamia, castor, jojoba, vitamin c + e, marshmellow root, rice oil, green algae, amla, optiphen, natural fragrance and LOVE!
Price: 8 oz - $16
If you’re looking for a butter that has a little bit of hold, for more defined twists/braids or slicked back styles/updos, this is the one. I remember being a little confused when I first tried it because most butters give me tons of moisture but no curl definition; which is fine since I use butters for protective styles and not for wash & gos. This one is special, though. You can use it for both styles. I can’t think of another butter that does that! A definite must-have in the textured hair beauty arsenal. The creamy and vegan ingredients also allow for days and days of moisture without having to reapply. Major plus!
This is my go-to butter all year round. If you like the deep moisture butters give without your hair being too weighed down (especially for those with fine natural hair) this one is perfect for you. It’s light and creamy without sacrificing long-lasting moisture. The perfect product. And the coconut scent is yum! I used it in this video to show how I twist my hair.
Ingredients: Aloe butter, Avocado butter, Mango butter, Shea butter, Coconut oil, Grapeseed oil, Jamaican Black Castor oil, Macadamia Nut oil, Olive oil, Sweet Almond oil, Argan oil, Black Currant oil, various essential and fragrance oils*
Price:4 oz - $6
You guys know I have to big up my favorite indie brands, too! Not only because she’s a sweet kid who focuses on health but because I know a lot of you college kids are side-eyeing me for the prices of the other butters…lol. Here’s an affordable, all-natural, extremely moisturizing skin AND hair jar of butter. With 10+ different scents to choose from, too. She can even customize the scent for you or swap out ingredients you may not be fond of. Love her <3
And last…but not least
How about making your own hair and skin butter from scratch? That’s always my favorite healthy option :)
Watch here to learn how quick, easy and affordable it is.
So there you have it, my end of the year beauty round-up for butters. I made sure to include something for every hair type, desired style and price range. And ALL healthy! I hope this list helps <3
Are the shoes you're wearing in that picture you just posted ideal for running on the treadmill or working out on the elliptical? Thanks for your response in advance!
The 5-finger vibrams are ideal for everything! I use mine to train, run, hike, for water sports. Pretty incredible. They take a little getting used to since they lack the thick cushioning most sneakers have. The “barefoot” experience makes your muscles work harder, though! Definitely not for everyone but I love the challenge. Mine are the KomodoSport.
Hey I wanted to know if your DIY organic deep conditioner with the raw honey, coconut milk, avocado, ect. was okay to use as a leave in conditioner as well or is it strictly for deep conditioning purposes?
Hey :) Because of the raw avocado and banana, the mixture goes bad after a day or so. You definitely don’t want to use it as a leave-in!
I think you just changed my life. At 4pm yesterday I watched your video, 6pm I bought organic oils, 9pm I used the organic almond oil on my skin and it already looks amazing, and I tried the oil pulling this morning and my sinus is cleared. THANK YOU! i think i'm going to go all natural completely! so excited for this change!
Messages like these keep me so inspired! Thank you for trying it and i’m way happy it all worked out for you <3
Hey Fran! I really hope you had a blessed Christmas Christmas! I just had to tell you that today for breakfast I had a green smoothie and I just finished 30min on the treadmill and I feel amaaaaaaaaaaazing! The green smoothie really did boost my energy! Thanks so much for spreading the wealth! Love you!!
Hey! That’s amazing to hear <3 What was in your smoothie??? Share the wealth! I’m happy you’re feeling it :)
Hiiiii fran! who knew that using lemon as deodorant works so well! My only issue is that it burns! And it made my underarms alittle red! :( is that a sign that i should stop or is that just something normal that happens?
Hey! :) That’s beyond cool that it worked for you, too! It made them a little red? Do you think you may have used too much? One quick swipe of lemon usually does the trick!
Hey Fran! *does the Dougie*LOVE LOVE LOVE what you do :) My husband and I are looking to start juicing soon - we will be purchasing the one that is listed as your fav! Breville Juicier, here we come!! I have a few questions. Is it ok to replace meals with juicing? If so, how many ounces should we consume? My plan is to find go-to juice recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner w/ healthy snack inbetween. Is this ideal/ok? I'm a new mom so I'm looking for convenience. Again, I adore you/what you do
Hey! :) That’s so awesome <3 I definitely wouldn’t recommend just drinking green juices instead of meals! Think about what typically goes into one glass of juice…greens, ginger, apples, etc. That wouldn’t be a well-rounded meal! Not enough variation/calories or the different nutrients your body needs throughout the day. A green smoothie loaded with fresh fruit, almond milk, seeds and greens makes an awesome breakfast, for sure! But a green juice should never be a meal replacement. Think of it as an incredible supplement to your meals, in case there aren’t enough greens in your day/on your plate! Hope that helps <3
Hey Fran, I was wondering if you might do video tutorials on two things: DIY toothpaste and a facial peel (similar to Queen Helen's Grapeseed Extract Peel). Thanks so much! So excited that a friend shared your videos with me. You're amazing and we appreciate you!
Hey :) I’m definitely doing a DIY toothpaste/mouth wash combo vid next month! As far as a facial peel, you can just beat an egg, squeeze a lemon over it, then apply it to your face for 15 min. Once it hardens, simply rinse it off with warm water. Then do a quick cold water splash to close your pores. It’s pretty amazing!
