Nature also has the power to heal us. Most medicines are derived, directly or indirectly, from plants. But nature can heal us mentally, too. Scientific studies have shown that natural scenes can reduce stress and anxiety, and have a strong calming and restoring effect. In one experiment, patients recovering from surgery were divided into two groups. One group was put in rooms that overlooked a copse of trees, the others had a view of a plain brick wall. Those with the natural view recovered faster, had fewer complications, and needed fewer painkillers.
Just because I liked something at one point in time doesn’t mean I’ll always like it, or that I have to go on liking it at all points in time as an unthinking act of loyalty to who I am as a person, based solely on who I was as a person. To be loyal to myself is to allow myself to grow and change, and challenge who I am and what I think.
Whatever it is you find difficult, do more of it.
If you could only love enough, you could be the most powerful person in the world.
Be soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let the bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place.
In general, people are not drawn to perfection in others. People are drawn to shared interests, shared problems, and an individual’s life energy. Humans connect with humans. Hiding one’s humanity and trying to project an image of perfection makes a person vague, slippery, lifeless, and uninteresting.
Let everything happen to you: beauty and terror.
Just keep going. No feeling is final.
I remember when I was younger and I wanted to be beautiful; now I’m older and I want to be intelligent. I want to burn hearts with brilliance and engulf souls with compassion. I want to be loved for my thoughts and nothing else.
